John Godfrey offered this unsmoked pipe on eBay. The former example was in pretty good shape but, of course, not as good as this. So, to the Pipes for Sale page went the other. This one has been smoked very little, if at all. The tobacco chamber appears to have never had tobacco in it. The paint is mint. The mouthpiece has no toothmarks . This beauty has been the exemplar of this shape/color in the collection for a very long time. It is only possible to replace it with one that has the original price sticker on it - which is exactly what has been done. That is why it is available to you now. Sal Vitello took a real liking to it and now it is his.
